In Conversation with Anna Mazzotta
"I'm a purist" Anna mused on her artworks, "I don't see myself as a brand." Never-the-less, Anna Mazzotta's distinctive artworks have secured her a reputation as a hotly-tipped contemporary British artist, as one of the youngest winners of the Jerwood Drawing Prize, the leading award for contemporary British art. Her vivacious, sassy narratives combine salacious portrayals of showbusiness and intimate studies of female friendship.
With evocative titles such as ‘Outshone by their Protegees, Berlusconi and his Cabinet, The Fish that Wanted to be Madonna, Being Good Isn’t Always Easy, The Wives of the Barbershop Quartet who left them for Fish, A Good Catch at Angel, Pouting at The Ritz, Why am I So Handsome and A Man of Expensive Tastes, Anna’s vivacious observations portray a sexy, humorous femininity, and a wry cynicism; on and off stage.
“All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts,”wrote Shakespeare in a stanza of ‘As You Like It.’
Drawing parallels with Toulouse-Lautrec, Anna’s avant-garde body of works, her most recent exhibition being titled The Pure Decadence explores entertainers, burlesque dancers, singers, magicians and dandies in various guises. Anna says: “My painting is a way of seeing the world, thinking – feeling, showing sensations, not just the mechanics of a scene, but instead emphasising energy, life and the letting the inner emotion of the characters come forth.”
Journeying through her works I am transported to the world of F Scott Fitzgerald and PG Wodehouse, to the sardonic, droll adult stories of Roald Dahl, and the movie stars of the heyday of Hollywood; Mae West, Errol Flynn, Fred Astaire and of course Marilyn Monroe. There is a hyperreal, affectionate, tacitly conveyed understanding that all of the characters which she illustrates have fans; an adored adornism; with the average canvas dimensions being 1.2m x 1.5m. Anna's artwork features in many public and private collections, most notably in those of Robert & Susan Kasen Summer and the royal photographer John Hedgecoe. Anna Mazzotta is currently on display at The Royal Exchange, please contact Holly Jade O'Leary at Alinea Law Members to schedule a viewing.
